Baruch Haba, Welcome back to Hebrew tips and tricks for Hebrew students. Today, we will examine ח and כ , making spelling Hebrew fun!
Chet, ח , and khaf, כ , both make a similar scraping, "ch" sound, like "ch" in Bach. So how to remember which letter to use?
If you look at a chet in block, it is like the top of a stovepipe hat! Just like the one Abraham Lincoln wore...so for משפחה mishpachah, which means "family" in Hebrew, let's imagine a family portrait where all of the people are wearing their top hats, even the mothers and children. See the picture in you mind's eye? Now you can remember that , משפחה, mishpochah, is spelled with a ח.
Now, let's take a peek at the other "ch" sound: כ . This letter, khaf, sounds like "cuff" so our mnemonic picture is handcuffs! A common word containing khaf is ,מלך MEHlek, king. Just because we use khaf sofeet, ך don't let that throw you. It is still a khaf. So imagine the king in handcuffs! Outrageous! Take those handcuffs off the king this instant!!
I hope you are enjoying our same sound Hebrew letter mnemonics! Feel free to make up your own, too. I would love to hear about them! The sillier the better, and more memorable.
