I really want to not only make learning Hebrew fun, but to help you really learn the language from the point of learning that you are now. If you know NO Hebrew, or I should say THINK you know no Hebrew, I will start you with learning alef bet, or the Hebrew letters, their sounds and words.
So today, I want to address the fact that you DO know Hebrew! For example:
Hallelujah. That's Hebrew. הללויה It means "praise yah" (a poetically shortened form of the holy name: יהוה)
The root , Halal can mean: to be bright, to shine, to be splendid, to boast, to praise, celebrate, glorify. And here's an odd thing about Hebrew. Halal can also mean: to be insolent, foolish, mad, rave or to feign madness!!
How about Amen? That's also Hebrew. אמן. It means "so be it", or "I agree/confirm"
The root, amen can mean: firm, true, faithful, to bring up, nurse, guardian, constant, honest, to last or continue, believe firmly, certainly or truly!
Perhaps you have heard Shalom. That is also Hebrew. שלום. I have it at the beginning of my blog, because it means Hello! It can also mean: goodbye, peace, health, welfare, good condition, success, comfort, salvation, secure and wholeness.
As you can see, the depth and layers contained in one Hebrew word has so many nuances and shades of meaning, it is no wonder there are so many translations of the Bible!!
Please send me comments & questions. Whether Hebrew is brand new for you, or you have spoken/studied Hebrew for years, my favorite thing to do is to dig for answers and lead people to resources to understand Hebrew better.
