Let's look at another pair of letters with the same sound: vet ב and vav ו. They both make a "v" sound, as in violin.
Vet is like our English word: veterinarian. So the word picture to associate with words containing a vet ב would be a veterinarian:
אהב, love, also contains the aleph which we learned in our previous post to associate with elephant/ALEPHant. So I LOVE my elephant, I faithfully take him to the VET. אהב This silly sentence reminds us that love, אהב, is spelled with an aleph and vet. There is only one letter representing the "h" sound, ה, so there's no need for a mnemonic for that.
The other Hebrew letter with the sound of "v" in violin is ו, vav. Vav is "hook" or "shepherd's crook" in Hebrew. So the word picture to associate with words containing a vav ו would be a hook or shepherd's crook.
דוד, David, has this sound in the middle. It's not too hard to associate a shepherd's crook with David of the Bible. He was a shepherd!!
Just a couple reminders: If the vet ב contains a dot (dagesh) it is the harder "B" sound. Further, be careful with the vav ו as it sometimes transforms to a vowel sound with the right niqqud, such as cholem or shureq. Go back and review my posts on Niqqudot mnemonics to remember how these look!
