אור 'ohr m. "light, brightness, daylight, sunlight, illumination"
As you can see, these two words sound the same but are spelled differently and mean two different things. How to remember which one is spelled with ayin, and which with aleph? Most people don't pronounce the glottal stop of the ayin, but instead treat both א and ע as silent letters.
Our mnemonic should help!
ע ayin = ayin means "eye" in Hebrew, so we need a word picture which contains "eye" somehow.
א aleph = let's picture an elephant for the aleph(ant)!
I see with my eyes (ayin) the skin of people and animals.
The elephant (aleph) blocks the light so I cannot see at all!
